Stranger Things. Lessons on friendship and trust in a weird world
Friendship and trust are essential features of our social lives. They are universal experiences but they also change over time. Can we borrow ideas about friendship and trust from the past to meet the challenges of the present? What can we keep and what must we leave behind? This interactive workshop seeks to answer these questions by drawing on the cultural imagination of our time. What happens when the ways in which these ancient philosophical themes of friendship and trust re-emerge in our time? The underlying idea is that friendship and trust emerge in these circumstances and help us to repair a sense of social emptiness. Growing up, discovering that we are similar to those who seemed different, interacting with our family, becoming part of a society in which we feel protected – all these ‘ordinary’ experiences often lead us to do extraordinary things for ourselves and for others. These situations require us to come to terms with a world that seems strange, and that can make us feel ‘weird’, both inside and outside our reality. In this light, friendship and trust have a dual role: to connect us with others and to help us find our place in the world.
