When Your Dog Smiles: The Bright and the Dark Sides of Anthropomorphism
Looking for the familiar and attributing our own, human feelings, traits, and needs to animals is nothing new. But how does it affect them? Does it only lead to harmful misunderstandings? Or maybe it can also help to create interspecies relationships and see the similarities rather than differences? We will look for the answers during our lecture and then, in the workshop part, the participants will be invited to discuss some examples of anthropomorphism and search for puzzling complexities in our everyday interactions with animals.
The event is part of the grant project “Figurations of Interspecies Harmony in Literature, Film and Other Cultural Texts of the English-Speaking Sphere, from the mid-19th to the 21st Centuries” led by prof. ucz. dr hab. Justyna Włodarczyk and funded by the National Science Centre (NCN), Poland.
